SCons Todo

When my work build finally becomes fully operational, there are some things I want to try with SCons source.

Tip of the Hat

Here's to the user who pointed out that you can debug scons using eclipse if you use the extension-less python script as your entry point. Thank god.
What, you may well ask, have I been up to that has kept me from posting from over 3 months? I have finally emerged from the Cpu-mandated internet black hole. Home improvement hell has occupied much of my time. I shall dispatch to you straight away the details of build engineer hell, adventures of the hydrophilic baby, and the tale of the cake book beat poet.

And something has teleported my computer's clock to the future - September 7, 2007 to be precise.

Build Engineer Hell

Ah, hell. How do I love thee? Let me enumerate (python range?) the ways:
The real trick is that this is pretty much solo, although slightly steered. Besides the python module writing, it's all stuff I've done already, so it can drag at times. But today was full of the promise of having almost all the pieces together; python interpreter importing the win32com.client calling the 3dsmax ole object's exposed functions, the scons scanner for the animation file enumerating the deps. Just short a couple of builders and scripts. Almost there ...
Bpu recently got a how-to book on making children's cakes. It has large colorful pictures of required ingredients and the finished product. It is enjoyable for her to read it to herself and to others. She gets a real patter going, what with the colors, shapes, and ingredients on each of the 38 pages.

  • Day 1: "Wow, a book of cakes! This is great! Daddy, I want to tell you what is in this one! There's frosting, and cake, and candles, and food dye! The next one has frosting, cake, food dye, and chocolate sprinkes. The next one has ..."
  • Day 2: "Mommy, have you seen my book of cakes? I can't find my book. I really need my book of cakes ..."
  • Day 3: "Daddy, I called you on the phone to tell you about my cakes! There's frosting, and cake, and candles, and food dye on this one! The next one has frosting, cake, food dye, and chocolate sprinkes. The next one has ..."
When we moved into sweet home Chicago to engage in some serious home improvement hell, Cpu mandated that I was not to reassemble and use the Shuttle XPC until our major improvement goals were complete.

Since I am a serious computing enthusiast, this seemed reasonable; otherwise, it was likely I would be reading various posts, spending time trying out new software, and otherwise pussy-footing around. We got quite a bit accomplished, but it drove me nuts and actually expired some free services I belong to. It also kept me from changing addresses of important financial and other services.

I would not advocate this to other computer addicts, unless faced with a similar life-threatening decision.
It turns out, like her sister Bpu, iPu loves the water. The day iPu learned to scoot and the day she learned to pull herself up were not much, compared to the day I set her down and gave Bpu a bath. While standing and running the water for Bpu, I discovered that iPu -- who I had left far down the hall with a pile of toys -- under foot.

Damn. That's one fast baby.

The motivation? Water. Bath water, to be precise. This kid loves to splash and play, the first real giggles I've heard from her. It's a real joy to see the girls play in the bath. If only she would puke before or while in the bath, instead of when being toweled off to dry ...
