Beej

|
When you can teach programming, master the innards of the C++ newsgroups, do SCUBA, caving, edit open-source map data for kicks in your free time, travel to foreign lands, program flash games, and still make the remainder of rent via your pirate-themed web site, you know you're good.

Beej has a network programming guide, a guide to taking good photos, and much fine original content on the intertron. And he's pretty rad to hang out with.

Gary Gygax Haiku

|
You probably already know that Gary Gygax is dead. What you don't want to know, is that upon hearing the news, I immediately wanted to compose a clever haiku on the subject.

Mr. Fortress Crack Master

|
The Crack Master has done some dope-ass audio for a great game mod, and works with me as an audio dude.

He's also really into math, audio, and many forms of art; he turned me on to (you got it) Dwarf Fortress, and some generative art tools. And all of Alistair Reynolds' paperbacks. Crack I say.

Almost has me inspired to tackle my least favorite topic, sequences and series, and get back into math. Almost.

Carpenter Uncle

|
Everyone needs this guy; putting together a handrail for your stairs but don't know how to finish it? Ask your Carpenter Uncle. Got a problem finding the drill bit extension you need, and uncertain if it even exists? Ditto.

Thanks to the Carpenter Uncle for informally vetting our sweet home Chicago, along with the other final house candidates.

UI Guy

|
Oh UI Guy, you always get the shaft. And somehow, the UI always comes out looking good. Why oh why, UI Guy?

There's never more than one UI Guy, and never much tools support, and usually management expects everything although there are no UI tools ready until the drop dead date. That doesn't give much time for iteration, we know. And somehow, with your duct tape, bubblegum, and hammer, you make it all work in the end.

My In-laws

|
These guys are great! My mother-in-law is an on-call LPN in Cheese-ville, and she works in the nursery with newborns and mommies. My father-in-law is a retired letter carrier in  Cheese-ville, and delivers flowers. They also both sell Post Office uniforms together.

We trade our Windows technical support and copy editing skills in exchange for their chocolate-chip cookies, baby sitting, and car rentals. I believe it is a pretty good arrangement.

This says nothing of how useful and wonderful they have been to our family; they were in town during the birth of each of our children, are very supportive of Cpu and I, and are otherwise kind, generous, and goodly atheists.

They also ply Bpu with fast food picnics over Meerkat Manor on some Friday nights, which I had reservations about: both the TV and the fast food.

I have made peace with their godless-given right to spoil her somewhat.

Mr. Pathetica

|
What, you ain't knowin'? Ok, here are the facts about Mr. Pathetica:
  • Fact: The leader of the band Pathetica.
  • Fact: From deep in Cheeseville. One could say, very nearly the heart of the Cheese.
  • Fact: About to have a baby, approximately one week after us.
  • Fact: Plays a mean hand of Sheepshead.
  • Fact: Chek's sister also bought him his first big bottle of Hooch during college.

Disco Stu

|
Disco Stu used to sit behind me at my last job. He taught me the arcane ways of Perl, apt-get update and apt-get upgrade. He showed me NetHack. He also personally executed the most brilliant old-school hack I have ever witnessed.

Mr. 3d

|
Mr. 3d is the best!
  • Loves Linux and the Ubuntu.
    • Has tried more flavors of Linux than you can shake a stick at. Possibly settled down with the big 'U'.
  • Throws killer parties with his babe!
    • For example, the letter 'S'-themed party consisting of Sushi, Saki, Samurai balloon battles, etc.
  • Made best Master Chief costume ever for Halloween, and wore it to the mall for Halo 2 pickup.
  • Reads the Make magazine, and always has a cool project going on.
  • Models like all-get-out.

The Apostate

|
Dude, you gotta play a game with the Apostate. He's funny, his characters and timelines are way interesting, and you pretty much get to riff and be whatever you want to be, and let him be whatever he wants to be. From space-opera to fantasy to heros to horror, you are going to have a fun time. The gross, the grand, the epic, they all go pretty well. Bad, sad, mad, glad events occur. I've especially enjoyed playing:
and many others. Either running or playing.

The Apostate also likes to eat, which means we get along pretty well.
